The Department of Botany was established in 1985-86 Botany also called plant science or plant biology is the science of plant life and a branch of Biology .Botany originated in prehistory as herbalism often related to plants of medical importance. Later on new techniques were developed for the study of plants including methods of optical microscopy, electron microscopy, analysis of chromosome numbers, plant chemistry, functions of enzymes and proteins, molecular genetic analysis etc. Modern Botany is a broad multidisciplinary subject with inputs from other areas of science and technology. Botanical research has diverse applications in providing staple foods and textiles, horticulture, agriculture, forestry, plant propagation, breeding and genetic modification, synthesis of chemicals and raw materials for energy production in environment management and maintenance of biodiversity.
Strengths of the Department:Â
- Committed, motivated innovative, dedicated to the core for the upliftment of the education system and welfare of the students.
- Latest infrastructure matching with the requirements of the present scenario whether recent books, e-books and journals in the library or well equipped two spacious labs, store, museums and a faculty room which cater to the needs of the students for in-depth analysis.

- Flower show is another feather in the cap of botany department which spreads fragrance in the entire area with the display of mind blowing variety of plants.
- The most remarkable achievement that the department can take pride in is the successful completion of UGC sponsored Major Research Project by Dr. Sunita Kaushik.
- Another milestone has been in supervising the research work of a Ph.D scholar as a co-guide.
- The insightful and innovative approach of the teachers has led the institution to establish the Central Research Lab.
- The department can boast of the countless research publication in both national and international journals.
- Faculty members do not miss any opportunity to attend national/international /workshops organised by different universities.
- Increasing academic and research activities in the department motivated UGC to permit the college to start medical lab technology course.
- Emulating the good works being done by the teachers, the inspired students excelling multidimensionally in academics (university positions and distinctions), sports, cultural activities, NCC, NSS etc.
- The department regularly organises field trips to see the plants to teach the students about the natural habitats of the plants.
- Alumni of the department grace various positions in almost all the departments.
Why study Botany ?
Because plants are so diverse, botanists share a common interests and curiosity about the thousands of species of plants on earth. The need for botanists will continue to grow in the future. Businesses, industry and research centres are also looking for botanists. The headline of a recent news article from the journal, Nature, was,”US university find that demand for botanists exceeds supply.” Although firmly rooted in the plant sciences a degree with botany equips you with an array of skills, including lab and field works which could open doors to a wide choice of careers like
- Jobs in schools, colleges, institutes and universities, plant research centres, museums, botanical gardens and arboretums
- Federal agencies
- Ecological consulting companies
- Petro-chemicals, chemicals, lumber and paper industries
- Pharmaceuticals
- Environmental and Bio-technical regulatory agencies
- Green house technician
- Environment impact specialist
- Landscape management and design
- Horticulturist
- Biological photographer
- Agricultural research service
- Botanical Survey of India
